What Is an Allergist? Your Partner in Managing Allergies, Asthma, and Immune Health

Allergist Dr. Sonia Shah offers skin testing

Understanding Your Allergy & Immunology Specialist

Hello, I’m Dr. Sonia Shah. As a dual board-certified Allergist & Immunologist, I often meet people who are tired of dealing with symptoms like constant sneezing, wheezing, itchy skin, hives, or confusing reactions to foods and medications. Frankly, they’re exhausted, and I understand why.

It’s my passion and my profession to help patients of all ages get to the bottom of why these things are happening and find lasting relief.

An allergist is a medical doctor who has completed years of specialized training focused entirely on the immune system—specifically, how it relates to allergies, asthma, and other immune conditions. At The Allergy Institute of Chicago, we delve into how your unique immune system responds to triggers. Whether it’s pollen, a specific food, or even an internal imbalance, we work collaboratively with you to protect your health and improve your quality of life.

What Conditions Do We Treat?

My expertise covers a broad spectrum of conditions that stem from the immune system’s complex responses. We are here to help you navigate:

  • Environmental Allergies: This includes seasonal triggers like pollen (hay fever) and year-round culprits like dust mites, pet dander, and mold.
  • Asthma: Often closely linked to allergies, we manage everything from mild, exercise-induced symptoms to severe, persistent asthma.
  • Food Allergies: We help identify triggers (like peanuts, milk, egg, soy, etc.) and manage reactions, from mild itching to life-threatening anaphylaxis. This also includes related conditions like Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE).
  • Chronic Sinus Issues (Sinusitis): We investigate when these issues are linked to underlying allergies or inflammation.
  • Skin Conditions: This includes Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema), chronic hives (Urticaria), Angioedema (swelling), and Contact Dermatitis (rashes from things like metals or cosmetics).
  • Drug and Insect Sting Allergies: We evaluate reactions to medications and develop plans for safe future treatment, as well as managing severe reactions to insect stings.
  • Immune System Concerns: We investigate potential Primary Immunodeficiency disorders in patients with recurrent infections and help manage conditions like Mast Cell Disorders.

Why See a Specialist Instead of Relying on OTC Meds?

While your primary care doctor is essential for your overall health, some conditions require a deeper dive. Over-the-counter remedies might mask your symptoms for a few hours, but they don’t address the underlying cause.

As a specialist, I use dedicated training and diagnostic tools to pinpoint the precise triggers behind your symptoms. This allows us, together, to create a personalized treatment plan that goes beyond just managing symptoms. This specialized approach is often the key difference between ongoing discomfort and finding genuine, long-term relief.

My goal is to help you live a healthier, more comfortable life, free from the limitations imposed by allergies or immune issues.

My Approach: The “Whole-Body” Connection

Becoming a specialist requires extensive dedication. My path involved medical school, a three-year residency in Internal Medicine, and then a specialized two-year fellowship focused solely on Allergy and Immunology, all at Rush University Medical Center here in Chicago.

This is an important distinction in my practice: I am dual board-certified in both Internal Medicine and Allergy/Immunology.

Why does this matter for you? Because I firmly believe allergies and immunological diseases are connected to the entire body. Your gut health, your stress levels, your hormones—it’s all linked. This “whole-body” perspective is foundational to my approach. It’s the core of what I call “The Art of Allergy”—a philosophy that blends the rigorous science of immunology with the compassionate art of personalized, holistic care.

I am committed to continuous medical education, am an Ambassador for the American Board of Allergy and Immunology, and ensure the care I provide at The Allergy Institute of Chicago reflects the most current scientific understanding for my patients.

A Closer Look at Common Conditions

Let’s look at a few conditions where specialized care can make a real difference:

  • Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever): Whether it’s spring pollen or year-round dust mites causing sneezing and congestion, we use precise testing to identify your triggers and create a plan that may include medication and immunotherapy (allergy shots or under-the-tongue tablets) for long-term relief.
  • Food Allergies: These can be frightening. We specialize in accurate diagnosis through a combination of history, skin tests, blood tests, and sometimes (when necessary) carefully monitored oral food challenges. Management involves strict avoidance education and emergency preparedness (like EpiPen training).
  • Asthma Management: Recognizing the strong link between allergies and asthma is key. We use tools like spirometry (a lung function test) to assess your breathing. Based on this, we create a personalized Asthma Action Plan so you know exactly how to manage flare-ups and use your medications correctly.
  • Skin Conditions (Eczema, Hives): We investigate the potential allergic or immune triggers behind itchy eczema rashes, sudden hives, or deeper swelling (angioedema).
  • Primary Immunodeficiency: If you experience frequent, recurrent, or unusual infections, we can perform specialized testing to evaluate your immune system’s function and, if needed, coordinate treatments.

Our Diagnostic Toolkit

Accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective treatment. At The Allergy Institute of Chicago, we use a range of methods to get clear answers:

  • Skin Prick Tests: Applying tiny amounts of allergens to the skin to check for immediate reactions.
  • Blood Tests (Specific IgE): Measuring allergy-related antibodies in your blood, which is useful when skin testing isn’t an option.
  • Patch Testing: Applying patches with suspected contact allergens (like metals or fragrances) to your back to diagnose contact dermatitis.
  • Pulmonary Function Tests (Spirometry): Measuring lung capacity and airflow to diagnose and monitor asthma.
  • Challenge Tests (Food/Drug): Performed under strict medical supervision in our clinic only when necessary to definitively confirm or rule out an allergy.

Personalized Treatment: Our “Art of Allergy” Approach

Managing immune conditions isn’t one-size-fits-all. At The Allergy Institute of Chicago, we partner with you to build a tailored plan based on our “Art of Allergy” philosophy:

  1. Allergen Avoidance & Environmental Control: Once we identify your triggers, we provide practical strategies, like using dust mite covers, understanding food labels, or modifying your environment.
  2. Medication Management: When avoidance isn’t enough, we guide you on the appropriate use of antihistamines, nasal sprays, asthma inhalers, or advanced biologic therapies.
  3. Immunotherapy (Allergy Shots): For lasting relief from environmental or insect sting allergies, we offer immunotherapy. This treatment gradually retrains your immune system to tolerate allergens, reducing symptoms over time.
  4. Patient Education: Empowering you with knowledge about your condition and treatment plan is central to everything we do.

Is It Time to See an Allergist?

Consider making an appointment at The Allergy Institute of Chicago if:

  • Your allergy or asthma symptoms are persistent or not well-controlled with your current treatments.
  • You’ve experienced a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis).
  • You suspect a food or drug allergy.
  • You have multiple allergic conditions complicating your health (e.g., asthma + eczema).
  • Your symptoms significantly interfere with your daily life, work, school, or sleep.

Your First Appointment: What to Expect

Preparing for your visit helps us make the most of our time together. Please bring:

  • Details about your symptoms (when they started, what triggers them, etc.).
  • A list of all your medications (prescription and over-the-counter).
  • Any previous allergy test results.
  • Your questions and concerns!

During the visit, I will take a thorough medical history and discuss your lifestyle. Based on this, we may proceed with diagnostic testing (like skin testing). We will then discuss the findings and collaboratively develop your initial plan. My goal is for you to leave feeling heard, informed, and confident in our partnership.
